How to generate and validate EAN-13
EAN-13 is a fixed 13-digit retail barcode. Enter the first 12 digits to calculate the final check digit, or enter all 13 digits to validate an existing number. A valid check digit only confirms the number structure; it does not assign a product identity or replace registration with the appropriate standards organization.

How is the check digit calculated?
Alternating digits are weighted by 1 and 3; the final digit makes the sum a multiple of ten.
Can I invent an EAN?
A mathematically valid number may still be unregistered or belong to someone else.
Why are there 13 digits?
Twelve carry the item number and the last digit detects common entry errors.
